PS - I apologize if I'm not supposed to post about non Swing City events. Is that the case? I specifically posted about a show on a Thursday, so that does not interfere with Swing City so I hope that's ok!

Lindi

Celebration Sale:
Our 8 Swing Dance Instructional DVDs are on SALE now. You can learn Lindy Hop, Balboa & Bal-Swing with the choice of Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced and 4 additional DVDs which focus on Balboa and Bal-Swing as well as 1 DVD that focuses on Transitions between all 3 dances. One through four DVDs are $34.95 each or buy four or more DVDs and they are only $29.95 each. Now is the time to buy and save big!

What's the celebration? We've put our DVDs on Amazon in order to reach out to the non-swing dance community. Of course, we prefer those in the know to order directly from our website: jitterbal dot com. But for those not in the community they now can buy them on Amazon and learn to swing dance AND hopefully get out into the swing dance scene. How can we help that? When we send out our DVDs we send out a letter to the customer explaining how they can find where to go out to social dance. If you have an event or discussion board in your area and would like us to include it in our letter, please send us an email and we'll be sure to do so. Our goal is to not just teach people to dance but to get them to join the community so that it can thrive and grow.

As a side, if you have purchased one of DVDs and would give it a 5 stars, and you have an amazon account and have bought anything there, please consider writing a review. You can find all 8 by going to amazon.com and searching "steve heidi swing DVD."

Thank you so much! And do check out the sale.
Happy Dancing,
Heidi & Steve

Swing City: lessons - What do you like in a lesson?

Words like "intermediate" and "advanced [beginner]" may mean more to experienced dancers than to those of us with some-but-limited experience and maybe a few lessons from a teacher or a different swing venue. Can you give a guideline for helping to decide whether to attend the "Beginner" or "Advanced beginner" lesson?

Thx

General Chatting - Marriott vs Somerville City Club

I like the City Club better than Huron Ave or the Marriott.
Huron Ave...Parking. I don't feel comfortable going to my car whether I'm parked in the lot (very dark also) or on the street where it's so secluded and scary for us ladies that go by ourselves. I don't like the amviance, feel like I'm dancing in a childs "daycare" space instead of an adult space.
The Marriott...I still expect more from the dance floor. For a place like the Marriott I thinks it's horrible, could be dangerous. Parking there is too limited.
City Club...The dance space could be bigger and the stage higher but it has plenty of parking, nice lighting and no doubt your in an adult space. I little distance from the T but all in all I rank it higher than the other 2.

Other Swing Dance Events - Compaq Big Band at UNH Public Swing Dance

The internationally acclaimed 20-piece Compaq Big Band returns to Durham, NH for a public swing dance sponsored by the UNH Hepcats(www.unh.edu/hepcats) on Saturday December 5, 2009. There's a group-friendly swing dance lesson from 7:00pm to 8:00pm that will have you doing all the basic steps, and the band plays from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm.

The dance will be held at the Memorial Union Building (MUB), 83 Main Street, Durham, NH, in the Granite State Room.

Admission is $3 for UNH students and $5 for all others. The general public is cordially invited. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Ticket Office located on the 3rd floor of the MUB, or at the door of the event.

The Compaq Big Band has kept New England swingin’ since 1975, with a big band repertoire that begins with honoring the classics from the ‘30s and 40’s as performed by the bands of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and other greats. They balance instrumental charts and horn features with vocal numbers such as those popularized by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Bobby Darin, Frankie Randall, Nancy Wilson, Diane Schuur, and many more.

But standards are merely a terrific base for a truly complete big band. The Compaq Big Band complements these arrangements with the best swing charts from the ‘50s right up through the hottest big bands of today. They believe that music from the bands of Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Kubis, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and more are a vital part of what dancers and listeners alike want to hear.

The Compaq Big Band showcases the power of 15 horns, a cookin’ rhythm section, a great feature vocalist, and terrific instrumental soloists for a diverse range of clients and events across the Greater Boston, Greater Worcester, Rhode Island, and Southern New Hampshire regions. For more information, or to order their CD "Bandwidth", please visit them on-line at www.compaqbigband.com
